Just a short drive north of Durban lies the upmarket resort of Umhlanga which is a very popular beach holiday destination in KwaZulu-Natal. This lovely stretch of coastline is situated just north of Durban and has the added attraction of the warm Indian Ocean waters. In 1962 Umhlanga Rocks became the first beach in South Africa to erect shark nets and today there are some 400 nets protecting 50 beaches.

Also found at Umhlanga is the Gateway Shopping Mall which is said to be the largest shopping mall in the southern hemisphere and the Sibaya Casino. In addition to the shops and restaurants here there is a range of activities from cinema to an artificial surf wave.
