Franschhoek is truly the heart of the Cape Winelands lying between wonderful mountain scenery. The whole area is a haven for vineyards which you will see covering the lower slopes of the mountains. This beautiful area offers some wonderful accommodation where you can stay at guest houses, self-catering cottages or perhaps indulge yourself by staying on one of the many wine farms. Many of the places to stay around Franschhoek offer lovely views of the surrounding area. The people of Franschhoek are very friendly and will ensure you really enjoy your stay here. The whole area is renown for growing some of South Africa's finest wines which can be enjoyed along with superb world class cuisine. Franschhoek boasts 8 of the Top 100 restaurants in South Africa giving it the title of the 'Gourmet Capital of the Country'.

Franschhoek is located just 45 minutes from Cape Town and is an ideal place from which to base yourself and explore this area. The main high street in Franschhoek has something for everyone with restaurants, art galleries, local craft shops, book shops, coffee shops and even a chocolate factory! The area is full of history and cultural heritage dating back many hundreds of years to when the Huguenots arrived here after fleeing their homeland in France. At one end of the main street in Franschhoek you can see the Huguenot Monument recognising this important event.  

As you tour around Franschhoek you cant help but notice the lovely Cape Dutch style homes and that a lot of the winefarms in the area are still called by their original french names. Its worth visiting the winefarms and taking in the tours which all offer something unique. Of course tasting is a key part of any tour and a great learning experience.  

Things to do in Franschhoek:

  • Visit the Boschendal Wine Estate - one of the most historic and largest wine estates in the area. Experience the wine-tasting and formal restaurant or perhaps bring a picnic. The beautiful 1812 manor house lies at the end of an avenue of old oak trees. Contact: 00 27 21 870 4200.
  • Arrange a personal wine farm tasting tour for your group and learn all about wine tasting and the variety of wines available in this area
  • Stroll along the main street and stop off at one of the many cafes, bars or restaurants and peruse the many lovely shops along here
