George Attractions

George is often referred to as the gateway to the Garden Route. Lying in the shadows of the Outeniqua Mountains, just inland from Victoria Bay on the N2 Cape Garden Route, George is different to the majority of towns along the Garden Route as it doesn't lie on the sea. George holds its status due to the fact that it has an airport and is also on an important intersection between the N2 and the N9 which runs through the Outeniqua Mountains onto the Karoo. George is a great place from which to base yourself and explore the wonderful surroundings full of natural wonders. George is well catered for in terms of accommodation for visitors and along with its Mediterranean style climate, provides endless activities for visitors all year round. George is one of the most popular destinations for golfers with the Fancourt Hotel & Country Club Estate being one of South Africa's top golfing and leisure resorts. The town itself is built around a modern grid style interspersed with some attractive older buildings such as St.Mark's Cathedral.

In George, you can jump aboard the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe (Steam Train) which runs between George and Knysna and provides a real taste of the old days whilst travelling through lovely countryside. Just a few kilometres from George are the popular beaches of Herolds Bay and Victoria Bay.

George is also very popular with golfers with over 10 golf courses, driving ranges and a golf academy in the area.

Other activities in George include:

Red Berry Farm - where you pick your own strawberries. They also offer an outdoor tea garden and fresh farm stall.
The Dutch Cheese Farm - for wine and cheese tasting.
The Bado Kidogo Bird Farm - a breeding farm open to the public and viewing can be done 365 days a year.
Garden Route Botanical Gardens - the only botanical garden on the Garden Route.
