Paarl, the third oldest town in South Africa, is a beautiful town situated in the Cape Winelands between Paarl Mountain and the immense Du Toitskloof Mountain Range.These two huge mountains provide welcome shade to the hot summer days in Paarl. Paarl Mountain is actually over 50 million years old while the Du Toitskloof Mountain Range actually takes on a pinkish colour as the sunsets. The wonderfully warm summer evenings create just the right environment for eating out and entertaining whilst sipping on cool chilled wine. Paarl has some lovely restaurants that cater for all sorts of culinary tastes.
If you take a wander down the main street in Paarl, which is actually 11km long, you will discover gift shops, art galleries and of course antique shops where you can find those magical things to take home. A favourite activity here is to pack up a picnic and to stroll around the Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve and Wild Flower Garden. If you are a bird watcher or should i say tweeter then you will be spoilt for choice in the birds that are to be found here.
There is also the beautiful Berg River which flows through the heart of Paarl. The Berg River hosts the world famous Berg River Canoe Marathon which actually starts at Market Street Bridge in Paarl. Other attractions around Paarl are the historic farms which help create the lovely fresh country lifestyle and make this a great choice for a holiday.
Things to do in Paarl:
Visit the Afrikaans Taalmonument or Language Monument. Erected 1975, it is the only language monument in the world. From the monument there are fantastic views across the valley and in the far distance you should be able to see Table Mountain.- Visit the oldest church building in SA still in use (built in 1805), the Strooidak Church.
- Wander around the variety of hand-made gifts and local products at the various art & gift shops.
- Experience the magical views from the 50 million years old granite boulders at Paarl Mountain Nature Reserve. Picnic spots and walking trails are available.
- Play a round of golf at Boschenmeer Golf and Country Estate, one of the finest golf estates in the country.
- Take a tour on the Paarl Wine Route taking in famous wine estates such as Laborie, Fairview, KWV, Nederburg and Simonsvlei.
- At Butterfly World you can experience a tropical garden with exotic butterflies, colourful birds, green iguanas and marmosets. There is also a Spider Room and a Reptile Bay making it a great experience for the whole family. Butterfly World is open Monday to Sunday between 09h00 and 17h00 including all public holidays except Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
- At Mayerskraal the kids can enjoy a child-friendly driving range, mini golf and a playfround. There is a beergarden restaurant and its open Sundays from 09h00 till dark.
