Chapmans Peak Drive is one of the most spectacular coastal roads in the world. This marine drive follows a 9km route between Noordhoek and Hout Bay following the rocky coastline. The road winds around 114 bends following the edge of Chapmans Peak which is part of the Constantia Berg. There are a number of spots along the road where you can stop and take some fantstic scenic photos. There are also a number of picnic spots where you can relax and enjoy the stunning views. There is a small tarif (approx R30 for a normal motor car) to pay to use this road but its worth it.

Chapmans Peak Drive provides a quick route between Cape Town and the Southern Peninsula. The road officially starts in Hout Bay and climbs quite steeply all the way up to Chapmans Peak. From here there are excellent views looking down across the sandy bay below. The road finishes at the coastal town of Noordhoek. Chapmans Peak Drive is also an excellent spot to stop for some whale watching during the season.

Recommended stops along Chapmans Peak Drive

  1. About 3.5 miles or 6km out of Hout Bay there is a spot called Die Josie Lookout. Its on the first headland that you get to and is approximately 550 feet high. You can park your car on the right and take some fantastic photos back towards Hout Bay. This spot is probably one of the most popular with photographers.
  2. A further 1.5 miles or 2km along the road you reach Chapmans Point. Again the spot is positioned on a headland jutting out toward the ocean. The views here span across the wide expanse of sandy beach at Noordhoek.
No matter what time of year you drive Chapmans Peak Drive it is always spectacular but sunset time is even more popular.
