The Highest Waterfall in South Africa
The Tugela Falls are the highest waterfall in South Africa and the second highest in the world. Over a series of 5 falls the water drops 948 metres or 3,110 feet. The Tugela Falls are located in the beautiful Drakensberg region of KwaZulu-Natal in the Royal Natal National Park. The Tugela River starts off life at the Mont-Aux-Sources plateau at the Amphitheatre escarpment. The top of Mont-Aux-Sources can be reached via two different trails one which takes you to the top of the Tugela Falls and the other which leads you to the foot of the falls. Obviously the easier hike is to the bottom of the falls and is a fairly easy 7km upward trail through the Tugela Gorge and indigenous forests. As you near the end of the trail you hope over some boulders and finally over a small chain ladder where you then have a great view of the water rushing down the five different cascades from the top.
