Bloemfontein, Free State
Bloemfontein is the provincial capital of the Free State and is the sixth biggest city in South Africa. Being located centrally Bloemfontein is a key transport hub and popular with tourists looking for a stopover when driving between Gauteng and the Cape. The centre of Bloemfontein has a mix of buildings dating from the 1960s and 1970s along with older sandstone buildings from the late 19th century. Overall the city has a friendly feel to it with a large contingent of young people which has led to an increase in the number of trendy bars and nightclubs. Perhaps a little known fact is that JRR Tolkein ( author of Lord of the Rings) was born here in 1892.
Its worth paying a visit to the Tourist Office which can provide you with useful information and guides such as the Rose Walk which will show you around the best of the 19th Century sandstone buildings to be found here.
