Just a short drive north of Durban lies the upmarket resort of Umhlanga which is a very popular beach holiday destination in KwaZulu-Natal. This lovely stretch of coastline is situated just north of Durban and has the added attraction of the warm Indian Ocean waters. Umhlanga Rocks attracts lots of local and international tourists that come to stay at some of the finest accommodation you can find along the Indian Ocean. The safe golden sandy beaches stretch north from here for about 200km.

The nightlife in Umhlanga is vibrant with numerous restaurants looking out across the ocean. Enjoy a meal in one of these or in one of the hotel restaurants before heading on to one of the trendy bars for an evening of fun and dancing. Places like the George Tapas and Wine Bar in Chartwell Drive is a popular spot showing live sport in a friendly atmosphere that often spills out onto the streets especially if the Boks are playing.

The Sharks Board is also worth a visit on Herrwood Drive in Umhlanga.  Here the life cycle of local sharks is studied closely to monitor how best to protect the sharks as well as the swimming community. In 1962 Umhlanga Rocks became the first beach in South Africa to erect shark nets and today there are some 400 nets protecting 50 beaches.

If you can't go without your fix of shopping while you are staying in Umhlanga then all you need to do is pay a trip to the Umhlanga Gateway Shopping Mall where you can quite easily spend a whole day in what is said to be the largest shopping mall in the southern hemisphere. In addition to the shops and restaurants here there is a range of activities from cinema to an artificial surf wave.  Other activities available in the area include deep sea fishing, kite boarding, surfing and scuba diving.

Diving off Umhlanga offers a mixture of dive sites from old wrecks teeming with fish to rocky outcrops. There are plenty of crustaceans and reef fish as well as the chance encounter with a Zambezi Shark which is bound to get your heart racing.
