Barrydale Travel Guide (Western Cape)

Barrydale

Route 62

The picturesque town of Barrydale lies on the Route 62 in the Tradouw Valley - a great alternative way to drive down to the Western Cape. This Klein Karoo town has everything you would need for stopping over on your way down or up the Route 62 (Oudtshoorn to Cape Town). The town is a popular stop off for bikers and tourists who are making the most of the scenic R62 route and its winding roads and mountain passes.

Just 24km from Barrydale on the road to Ladismith is the popular Warmwaterberg Spa where there is a hot mineral water spring.  There is a restaurant here as well as three outdoor pools (1 cool and 2 hot). The temperature in the outdoor pools varies between 25 degrees and 42 degrees. There is a nice hiking trail to try here as well as a number of roads up into the nearby mountains.

In the town itself there is a choice of restaurants serving traditional Karoo meals to family friendly pizza places. Restaurants that serve 'Karoo-style' dinners include the Clarke of the Karoo and the Al Fresco Deli. Other restaurants include the Country Pumpkin and Jam Tarts. For a 'meal with a view' try the Blue Cow restaurant which overlooks a small dam with the mountains as a backdrop.

Barrydale has a sunny climate with the possibility of waking up to snow on the mountain tops in the Winter. The history of the area and the buildings is summed up in the beautiful Dutch Reformed Church.

If you are heading out of Barrydale on the R62 towards Cape Town there is a turn off to the left (R324) which takes you along the stunning Tradouw Mountain Pass. The pass was officially opened in 1873 but had a major uplift between 1974 and 1980 when it was reopened. Today the pass is beautiful carving a route through beautiful countryside with the Tradouw River following you all of the way.

Don't forget to pop into one of the Barrydale Cellars who are one of three cellars (Ladismith Cellar and Oudtshoorn Cellar) who joined forces to create Southern Cape Vineyards. At the Barrydale Wine Cellar you can try one of their wine ranges (Tradouw, Misty Point or SevenFalls) or their Joseph Barry Cape Potstill Brandy.
