Western Cape Attractions
Lambert's Bay used to be just a small fishing village but today is a popular holiday destination especially in the summer. You will find Lambert's Bay on the West Coast of South Africa approximately 290km from Cape Town. The main access route is via the N7 from Cape Town turning west on to the R364 close to Clanwilliam but for a more scenic and leisurely journey you could take the coastal R27 route.
Today the village still maintains a quaint feel with the early morning sounds of fishing boats leaving from the harbour to catch their fish. When the sea waters are calm and crystal clear then the famous Diamond Boats take to sea in search of the large diamonds that can be found on the sea bed. The climate here is similar to the Mediterranean with dry and sunny summers and mild rainy winters. The temperature in the summer can be extreme but the light sea breezes bring welcome relief. Perhaps the best time to visit is in early March and April.
Perhaps the most famous attraction is the wonderful Bird Island bringing visitors from far and wide. There is a concrete jetty which provides access to the 7.5 acre rocky outcrop. The island is an important breeding ground for African penguins, Cape gannets and cormorants as well as the lovely Cape fur seals (see photo). If you get up early in the morning you will be rewarded with some of the best bird viewing available. Of course with this amount of birds in such a position there is always a fair amount of noise and smell. However the sights you see will leave a lasting impression on you.
The sand dunes in Lambert's Bay provide lots of fun for 4x4 and quad bike enthusiasts. In the waters off the beaches you can have fun on jet-skis, speed boats, dinghies and rafts. The white beaches here attract the sun-worshipers and sport freaks who play beach volleyball and touch rugby. The annual Crayfish Festival attracts a lot of people to Lamberts Bay indulging in delights such as the West Coast Rock Lobster.
