Champagne Castle Adventure Centre

General Information

Champagne Caste Adventure Centre is approximately 4 hours drive away from Johannesburg and 2 and a half hours away from Durban, the perfect gateway off the N3.

The Adventure Centre is nestled in the Central Drakensberg at the foot of the famous Champagne Castle and Cathkin Peak, a World Heritage Site. The centre operates from Dragon Peaks Mountain resort, a real family-friendly destination. Steep terrain, mountain streams, forests and an average of 300 good weather days a year, sets the scene for you to discover an unforgettable adventure.

The activities are exhilarating, diverse and safe and the friendly well-trained guides will assure you have a good time. Most of the activities are spectator friendly, for those who just want to watch. Delicious meals are served at the restaurant or you you can refuel at the supperette on site. Dragon Peaks has fantastic fascilities for day visitors out of season: swimming pool, play park, games room, braai and picnic areas and offers these fascilities to all their guests. 

Scootours

This will bring out the child in everyone. Enjoy an exhilarating 4.5km downhill descent on a monster mountain scooter, crossing steep terrain, meandering grasslands and an indigenous forest. A free 4×4 ride takes you to the top of the hill before you descend back down on the non motorised Scootours making this a very eco friendly activity. These Swiss designed scooters are used in the Alps during the summer season on the ski slopes when the snow is gone.

Duration: 90 min to 120min

What should i bring with me? Just yourself, family and friends and CLOSED SHOES.

Can anyone do this? Yes. The scooters are stable and you control the speed. Adults and kids over 10 can book solo rides, and juniors can double up with mom or dad.

Abseiling

Abseilinghas been around a long time as an adventure sport but it is still a firm favourite amongst adrenaline seekers. It is practiced in a controlled environment which makes it a very safe activity, yet stepping backwards over the edge and descending down the cliff will give you an adrenaline rush!

Try abseiling down Chicken Hill which is 25m high. The first 10m is on a cliff face and the remaining 15m you are abseiling down an overhang. The walk to the top of the abseil is approximately 15 minutes from the office. No previous experience needed but please remember to bring your sunscreen and hat and to wear closed shoes.

Tree Top Adventures

At Champagne Castle Adventure Centre there is a zip-line course and a King Swing. There are two training zips close to the ground before proceeding to the trees. Zip around the course as many times as you like, until your time is up. 1 hour turn-around time. Cost for Zip-Line Course only: R165 per person.

King Swing: Swing off a 6m platform for a real adrenaline rush. Cost: R125 per person.

A Zip & Swing Combo ticket costs R230 per person.

White Water Tubing

Available in the Summer only. The Sterkspruit is a low volume creek and has a small catchment area, however in summer during the heavy rainfall period it has plenty of water to make for some interesting white water tubing. Tube down class 2 rapids with a guide, life jacket and helmet. It is suitable for the whole family. The turnaround time is 1 hour.

Mountain Biking

Purpose built MTB tracks, link jeep tracks on the 1000 acre estate of  Dragon Peaks Mountain Resort. The spectacular Cathkin Peak, Sterkhorn and Champagne Castle is in the backdrop. 

Five loops of 4km; 7km; 1.7km; 1.2km and 1.2km  respectively, have been built, colour coded ,marked and mapped. A steep pumping climb up a jeep track will surely test your fitness level.  Down hills are mainly single tracks. Features e.g. sharp cut backs, berms, wooden bridges and wooden curbs are built on the trail to test your skills and make the ride more interesting.

You can obtain a MTB tag and map with detailed route descriptions at the adventure office. A 1-day pass will cost you R50pp and a multi-day pass R100pp. Dragon Peaks guests only pay a once-off R50 for the duration of their stay. Kids under the age of 16 ride for free.

We do not rent bikes, please bring your own!
