Jeffrey’s Bay has built up a well-deserved reputation as the place to surf in South Africa but what makes it so special? Well for starters how about glorious sunrises, the opportunity to surf at dawn with the dolphins, clean peeling waves and long surfing rides!
The great surfing at ‘Supertubes Beach’ draws the surfing community from all over the world and in season Jeffrey’s Bay is buzzing with holiday tourists which thrives on their business. Weather you are an expert or a novice the waves at Jeffrey’s Bay will thrill and excite you. The town itself has lots of restaurants, coffee shops and of course surfing shops.
Supertubes offers the best surfing conditions when the wind is southwesterly and creates waves anything from 2 feet to 12 feet depending on the direction of the swells. In the right conditions its possible to catch a wave all the way to ‘The Impossibles’ and even past an area called ‘The Point’. Those in the know that see a surfer going for broke will signal both arms in the air to indicate that the surfer is going all the way. Surfers love the thrill of coming out of the perfect barrel wave even if it does mean a 300m walk back up the beach to get where they started from. A perfect long ride can have you surfing for about 2 minutes. The barrels on the waves here typically happen towards the end of the run.
Jeffrey’s Bay is located on the Sunshine Coast of South Africa and can be easily reached via Port Elizabeth Airport or the smaller George Airport. PE Airport has excellent connecting flights with Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town.
The coastline is brimming with self-catering accommodation offering easy access to the beaches and stunning sea-views. Grab your surfboard in the morning and you can be surfing the waves in a matter of minutes.
We have a number of self-catering apartments in Jeffrey’s Bay if you are looking to enjoy some of the great surfing on offer in South Africa.
